Object As Letter

2024

This project challenged me to think outside the box and definitely go outside my comfort zone. For the small scale, I decided on the statement “True North.” I knew I wanted this to be in an outside setting, and that I wanted to use my compass as an O. This idea was inspired by my mom. Her and I love exploring and hiking the outdoors together, and both have a love for compasses. In order to find the rest of the pieces to form these words, I searched outside at Lester Park for items that would fit these letters. I first took this picture by setting the letters against a rock in the woods. However, I decided to retake the photo and take it a step further. I took all of these letters and hot glued them to a piece of acrylic. Then I brought this piece back to Lester Park and took a photo of it in front of many different backdrops.

For the large scale version of this project I decided on organizing rubber ducks into the statement “Stay Afloat.” This piece stands over 4 feet long and is held together by hot glue, popsicle sticks, and green wire. I brought this to Twin Ponds and photographed it in the water from the top of the bridge. I then brought it to a couple different areas like the beach of the pond, and also to the bottom of the waterfall to photograph. I think that both the small scale and large scale photographs turned out better than expected and I am very proud of the outcomes and the different versions of each.
